Who is This? (Mark 1:1-15)

Group Guides | Sharing the gospel, sharing our lives (1 Thessalonians 2:8)

By way of introduction: What things have you heard, that have changed your life?

Read Mark 1:1-15

Throughout the Old Testament we hear the repeated notion, “someone is coming” and it has echoed from Genesis 3, through all the prophets, and through every book. Here we see the final messenger with the same message….someone is coming and it’s good news.

Mark wastes no time in telling us incredible things are happening here, prophecy is being fulfilled. Look at Isaiah 40:3, Matthew 11:7-10 & Malachi 3:1.

  1. Who is John the Baptist, what is his message and how does he help prepare the way?

  2. The word ‘Baptism’ means ‘Sprinkled, washed, cleansed’ (we know this from context of the use of the word in the New Testament book of Hebrews). So, what does Baptism in the Holy Spirit mean? Ezekiel 36:26-27, Romans 8:9-11, John 14:26, John 16:5-11, Hebrews 10:19-22

  3. In vs 7-13, what can we see about Jesus’ humanity and Jesus’ divinity?

    Read Mark 1:16-34

  4. Mark is highlighting Jesus’ Authority as the Son of God. In what ways do we see Jesus has authority expressed in this series of speedy stories?

  5. Jesus’ fame and ministry was spreading and everyone was looking for him! But how did Jesus respond and what did he clarify is the purpose of his ministry?

  6. What implications does this have for us as we follow and reflect him, and as we share Christ with others?

Pray for one another.
