From Fear to Faith (Mark 4:35 - 5:43)
Group Guides | Sharing the gospel, sharing our lives (1 Thessalonians 2:8)
By way of introduction: What are people’s phobias that we need to consider to be loving and mindful of how we care for them?
Read Mark 4:35 - 5:43
1. Jesus asks a question of his disciples (Mark 4:40), that aims at our hearts. Why are we often so afraid, what is going on in our hearts concerning fear and faith?
2. In the scene of the region of the Gerasenes, Jesus frees a demonised man.
a. How does that man now live free (as seen in this passage)?
b. We have also been freed from fearful and oppressive things, how does this now shape our lives?
3. When Jesus heals the woman afflicted by the discharge of blood, and then when he heals Jairus’s daughter…
a. Jesus’ message is that people need to….
b. How does this apply to us, when Jesus doesn’t promise to heal us all of our afflictions in this life?
4. Back in that scene in the boat, when after a mega storm there is a mega calm, and the disciples have mega fear (the Greek word used for ‘great’ in each case of the text is ‘megas’). In that moment the disciples ask the key question that Mark’s Gospel is answering. How does the cross and resurrection of Christ ultimately answer this key question?
5. We all have fears, and if we’re honest about them we can apply the gospel to our fearful hearts. Discuss some examples of fears that we have and encourage one another with how the gospel of Christ calms our fears and moves us from fear to faith in Jesus.
Pray for one another, that we would be a church that in honesty brings our fears to Jesus and says amen in faith.
